Private Virtual Server – VPS Hosting Benefits For Businesses

submitted by on Apr.22, 2009

Running an internet business requires having a reliable ISP and web server However, some of the costs involved in building and maintaining a sever cluster can be cost prohibitive. Fortunately, there is another server solution for the business owner called Virtual Private Server.

A Virtual Private Server is much what the name suggest, firstly it is virtual at least for multiple users it is. There is only one physical server on property. Secondly, this server is private, meaning that it is designed specifically for the business that purchases it, not for outside sources.

Having one server on property and multiple users could be a problem if to many individuals log on at once and try to use the same applications. A Virtual Private Server solves this issue by providing individual virtual servers for each user. Although there is physically only one server available, advanced technology allows for the division of information on the server to create a virtual server for each user.

A benefit of using a Virtual Private Server is that each virtual server runs independently of the others. Each user runs their own operating system off of their individual virtual server and can also run and install programs off of the network.

Conversely, each user can access any program that has been downloaded on any computer within the virtual network. For example, if the user is using a publishing software program and needs to use one of the templates, which were not initially installed, the computer will search the network for the application and install it on the computer. No CD’s are needed and much hard drive space is spared because full program applications do not need to be installed until needed.

The virtual servers have no effect on the hardware of each individual computer and cannot access the hardware; the Virtual Private Server is generally booted off of a disk image, a backup of a real disk that is saved as a program on a computer.

Using a Virtual Private Server has a higher security level than a traditional server Without an actual server available to be compromised, a Virtual Private Server confuses anything that attempts to infiltrate the system. The more virtual servers being utilized, the safer the network becomes.

Virtual Private Servers allow businesses to provide a high-end service to their customers and employees at a low-end price. Being cost effective means that the business owner can re-invest monies that may have been expended on computer expenses in his employees or into growing his business.
